1969-71 Terry Sawchuk & Gilles Villemure

New York Rangers jersey worn by Terry Sawchuk during his final NHL season and Gilles Villemure in his only Vezina-winning campaign.  Sawchuk played in 8 regular season games with the Rangers during the 1969-70 season, going 3-1-2 with a 2.91 GAA.  He also recorded the 103rd regular season shutout, the final of his career.  In the playoffs, he played in 3 games, going 0-1.  Unfortunately, after a post season argument with teammate Ron Stewart that led to an accident and a month-long hospital stay, Terry died on May 31, 1970 at the age of 40.  He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971 after the required three-year wait was waived.

Gilles Villemure then wore this same jersey for a time during the 1970-71 season.  Villemure played 34 games during the regular season, going 22-8-4 with a 2.30 GAA and 4 shutouts, splitting time with Eddie Giacomin.  In the playoffs, he played in 2 games, going 0-1 as the Rangers were eliminated in the semi-finals by Chicago.  For Villemure and Giacomin’s efforts, they were awarded with the only Vezina Trophy of their career after giving up only 177 goals during the regular season.
